Masamba Kombucha was founded with the aim to bring a different, higher quality, health drink to Zimbabwe. When they contacted us they had a strong why. They were committed to using the best ingredients to produce the best Kombucha on the market. Their Kombucha was one of the first brands in Zimbabwe but other entrants had come in to compete, and even though they were one of the first, they were still the best-kept secret in town.
Their brand was underdeveloped and their voice was absent for their audience. A lot of work was done to figure out what their company culture was and who their target audience was. Their tagline “For those that drink different” provided an entry point for us as well as a very good reason to rebrand. It inspired their staff and drove innovation resulting in some unique flavors that were not available from any other competitors. Their mission provided a north star that let us know who we were communicating with and also guidance on the external brand attributes like the visual identity and messaging.
The fruit illustrations were done in a hand-drawn style to match the handcrafted and small batch brewing claim. We created the “M” bottle logomark and a color palette that paid homage to the original baobab flavor. We also took care not to overdo the overall brand aesthetic in order to stay true to their small batch, brewing as opposed to a big brewery owned brand.
Kombucha brands are relatively new in Zimbabwe and we wanted to educate new drinkers about the drink but also because Masamba is committed to using the best ingredients to produce the best Kombucha on the market, we wanted to make sure this was reflected in their brand and website.
